Oak Wilt Updated Maps and Prevention Tips

Leon Valley has updated Oak Wilt maps for the Bluebird 1, Bluebird 2, Evers 1, and Evers 2 areas. Oak Wilt is a fungal disease that moves above ground via insects and infected red oak wood and below ground through connected roots. Early action can save trees and protect property value.

What to know

  • High-risk zones: Areas inside the red line (infection) and the 75-ft buffer (green) should be prioritized for treatment now. The 150-ft blue zone should be monitored and prepared for treatment soon.
  • Timing: Avoid pruning Feb. 1 – June 30 when beetles and fungal spores are most active.

Actions for homeowners

  • Monitor trees for wilting or leaf discoloration.
  • Disinfect tools between trees and paint fresh wounds immediately.
  • Consider trenching to sever root connections where recommended.
  • Treat healthy high-risk oaks with injectable fungicide (typically every 18 months).
  • Contact a certified arborist for injections, pruning, or root-cutting work.
