Lead Service Line Notice
Lead Service Line Notice – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
The City of Leon Valley recently mailed notices regarding water service line materials. We understand residents may have questions. Below are answers to the most common concerns.
❓ Why did I receive this notice?
The EPA now requires all public water systems to complete an inventory of water service line materials and notify customers if the material is:
- Lead
- Galvanized requiring replacement
- Unknown (may contain lead)
If you received a letter, your service line was identified as one of these categories — most commonly “Unknown.”
❓ Does this mean there is lead in my water?
No.
This notice is not a water quality test result. It does not mean lead was found in your drinking water. It simply means the City does not have confirmed records of the pipe material serving your property.
❓ What does “Unknown” mean?
“Unknown” means historical records do not clearly identify the material of the service line connecting your home to the water main.
Many homes categorized as “Unknown” do not have lead pipes.
❓ Why is the City sending this now?
This notification is required under new federal EPA Lead and Copper Rule updates. All water systems across the country must inventory service lines and notify residents.
❓ Is Leon Valley’s drinking water safe?
Yes. Leon Valley’s water continues to meet all state and federal drinking water standards. The notice is about pipe material records — not water test results.
❓ How can I find out what my pipe is made of?
You may:
• Contact the City for additional information
• Hire a licensed plumber BUT the city is working through our list to make the identification we are just asking for your patience
We appreciate your understanding as we comply with new federal regulations. Our priority remains providing safe, high-quality drinking water to our community.
