Leon Valley Tree Advisory Board News

The Leon Valley Tree Advisory Board (TAB) met this week on Tuesday, July 14th for their first meeting.  The TAB is a ten (10) member Board and they were joined by two (2) foresters and certified arborist from the Texas Forest Service.  The first two (2) priorities of the Board are the: (1) Leon Valley Tree Challenge an initiative to plant 10,000 trees by the year 2020 and (2) to initiate a Tree Survey which would inventory all trees in the City and identify Heritage trees (trees with trunks which are 18-inches or more in diameter).  The Board is also very concerned about oak wilt which is attacking certain areas of the city and they have decided to begin an informational campaign.  The first public meeting is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, September 2, 2009, at the Leon Valley Conference Center.

    4.    Volunteer opportunities are still waiting!

The City Council adopted the Leon Valley Tree Challenge recently and appointed a Tree Advisory Board to help implement the challenge to have 10,000 trees planted by the year 2020 in Leon Valley.  Part of that "Challenge" is to do a survey of heritage trees already planted in Leon Valley.

 5.  Something new to know about Leon Valley?

                    What's a Heritage Tree?

Chapter 14, "Zoning" of the City Code of Ordinances defines Heritage Tree as:

Tree, heritage. Any tree that has been designated by the city council, after public hearing and due notice to the owner of the tree, as a tree of notable interest and value to the City of Leon Valley because of its location, size, age, or historical association with the community or having a diameter of twenty-four inches (24") or greater.

If you know of a scout who is looking for an eagle project - or are interested in volunteering to help with project, please contact Kristie Flores, Community Development Director at (210) 684-1391, ext. 227.

6.   Remember to conserve water - we are still in under Stage II Water Restrictions - see the city's website for Ordinance 09-033 with current rules on water restrictions in Leon Valley!
