Street Maintenance Sales Tax Working for You!
In November
2007, Leon Valley voters approved adding 1/4 cent sales tax to be used for the
maintenance and rehabilitation of existing streets
and alleys. The tax began on April 1, 2008. The City of Leon Valley has
approximately 39.52 miles of streets and roadways. Each year the Public Works
Department uses its pavement management system to help assess and determine
maintenance needs for your roadways.
Slurry Seal is the usual method used by Leon Valley to seal aging pavement and
to prevent pot holes and more serious damage to the street foundation. Slurry
Seal is a
mix of asphalt and aggregate, a binder and some additives that produces tough
preservation coat on existing streets. This seal fills minor cracks, levels out
imperfections, restores skid resistance, and improves the aesthetics of the
street. Slurry Seal extends the life of a street by protecting the the street
from wear and tear, environmental stresses, and aging. Slurry seal applications
provide considerable savings over waiting for street surface breakdown. Slurry
seal can significantly extend the life of
existing pavement by about 5-7 years.
The map below
illustrates slurry seal work done in 2008 of almost 4.89 miles of street at a
cost of of $ 276,467. The solid lines on the attached map show the actual
streets that received the slurry seal in 2008. Street maintenance work in 2009
will be mapped and posted to the website in the future along with tips for
residents when
slurry seal operations are in your neighborhood.

In March
2010, the City Council approved the 2010 Slurry Seal program with its award of a
contract to Viking Construction. With amendments to the contract on March 16,
2010, the City will begin an aggressive program to slurry seal 101,086 square
yards of slurry seal. Residents will be notified when the slurry seal operation
will begin on their street and cars are not permitted to drive on the slurry
seal while it is setting.
With this
large project many streets in Leon Valley will receive the benefits of the
Street Maintenance Sales Tax at work in their neighborhood. More streets will
be done in the following years as we work to keep Leon Valley's infrastructure
sound and safe!

Department at 681-1232 for further information.
