The City of Leon Valley
operates a Parks and Recreation activity. This is a function of the Public
Works Department. They operate and maintain the 23-acre Raymond Rimkus Park
that was established in 1978 with a grant from the Texas Parks Department. The
Park includes walking trails, basketball courts, soccer and softball fields, a
picnic pavilion and picnic shelter and numerous shaded picnic tables. The
picnic shelter and pavilion are available for reservations by calling 684-1391.
Reservations for use of the field are also available. The children’s playground
is very popular with many families. Two restrooms in the park are located along
the trails. A large parking area is provided to serve the public. The park is
compliant with ADA requirements and is energy friendly as there are no lights in
the Park. The Park fields are watered by the use of Recycled water furnished by
SAWS.
Adjacent to the Raymond Rimkus
Park is another 36 acre wooded site that has been leased to the Leon Valley
Historical Society for preservation as a natural area in conjunction with their
historic Huebner Home. Mr. Huebner’s grave has been restored in this area
overlooking his home.
Public Works provides all of the
maintenance for the Parks system and assists in administering of the rental
activities for the area. Recent subdivision growth in the City of Leon Valley
has resulted in the acquisition of another park site at the end of Shadow Mist.
Park operations and maintenance are a responsibility of the Public Works
Department
(210)
681-1232.
The City Park Commission is appointed by the City Council to provide
oversight and guidance regarding the park. They meet on the 2nd Monday
of each month at 7:00 p.m., generally at City Hall.
Eagle Scout candidates may find useful projects in the park. Follow this
