Site Background Information

The Bandera Road Ground Water Plume Superfund site area is currently estimated to be approximately one mile long by one-half mile wide. The plume is centered in a business area, with some homes nearby, between Poss Road and Grissom Road, southwest of Bandera Road. The site consists of ground water contaminated with chlorinated solvents tetrachloroethene (PCE), trichloroethene (TCE), and cis-1,2-dichlorethene (cis-1,2,-DCE or DCE). PCE is the most frequently detected compound. Site investigation and monitoring is being overseen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) identified the site in 2004 while conducting an investigation at the Savings Square Shopping Center, near the intersection of Grissom Road and Bandera Road. In early 2007, the site was placed on EPA’s National Priorities List, qualifying the site for long-term cleanup under the Superfund program.

A contaminant source near the Savings Square Shopping Center was confirmed in April 2009. EPA is evaluating other potential nearby source locations. EPA anticipates finalizing the cleanup plan for the site by January 2011.

Bandera Road CAG Background

The Bandera Road CAG was formed in 2007 to provide input to EPA on issues regarding the site’s investigation and cleanup. The Bandera Road CAG meets quarterly. Meetings are open to the public. CAG members are residents of Leon Valley, members of other local government agencies (Northside ISD, Bexar County, Edwards Aquifer Authority, etc.) who all have an avid interest in this process to keep our water clean.

The CAG is currently chaired by John Hoyt, a manager with the Edwards Aquifer Authority and Leon Valley resident. The CAG is always interested in new members.  To learn more about the CAG, contact CAG chairman, John Hoyt, at jhoyt@edwardsaquifer.org or 210-477-5136.

EPA is currently assisting the CAG by providing contract services through EPA’s Technical Assistance Services for Communities (TASC) program.
